County calls for burn ban

A stage 1 burn ban has been declared by the Yakima Regional Clean Air Agency for both the upper and lower areas of Yakima County.

Restrictions, however, may differ within the boundaries of the Yakama Indian Reservation.

The ban is in place until further notice due to poor air quality conditions combined with poor ventilation and dispersion.

During a stage 1 burn ban all outdoor burning, including agricultural burning, is prohibited.

The use of any fireplace, uncertified wood stove or uncertified fireplace insert is also prohibited unless it is the only adequate means of heating a home.

Clean Air Agency officials note a certified wood stove, certified fireplace insert or pellet stove/insert use is allowed.

However, they point out that no excessive smoke (more than 20 percent opacity) is allowed from any wood burning device beyond a 20-minute start-up.

All violations of the burn ban are subject to civil penalty.
