Comprehensive plan updates in the works

Former Sunnyside City Councilman Bruce Epps is sworn in as the newest member of the Sunnyside Planning Commission at Tuesday’s meeting.

The Sunnyside Planning Commission has tasked Sunnyside Planner Jamey Ayling with the work of reviewing and revising the city’s current comprehensive plan.

At Tuesday’s meeting, Ayling told commissioners he is working on chapter seven of the plan. The chapter covers economic development.

Ayling said he has used a number of resources for updating statistics on job growth and income levels of residents in the city of Sunnyside.

Currently, he is trying to determine the acreage available for development.

“It’s amazing how many sources (for data) are out there,” Ayling told commissioners.

The commission Tuesday directed him to revise the goals outlined in the chapter, as well.

Commissioner DeAnn Hochhalter told him the first goal should be “selling Sunnyside.”

She said the commission wants a community calendar and believes economic development is made possible through advertising the community and all it has to offer.

The revisions were discussion items only.
