Teen hurt in crash

A local teenager was injured Sunday evening in a two-vehicle accident just northeast of Sunnyside.

Jose Meraz, 16, of Sunnyside was a passenger in one of the vehicles that collided at the intersection of SR-241 and SLI Road. Meraz was rushed to Sunnyside Community Hospital.

Yesterday’s mishap occurred at about 5:45 p.m.

Washington State Patrol troopers report that Mario Estrada, 19, of Grandview was driving a 2011 Audi four-door sedan eastbound on SLI Road. WSP officials said Estrada pulled out onto SR-241 in front of a 2007 Ford F-150 pick-up.

The truck was southbound on SR-241. Moises S. Moreno, 53, of Prosser was behind the wheel.

According to the WSP, Estrada faces a charge of failing to yield the right-of-way.

Neither Estrada nor Moreno sustained any injuries as a result of the collision. A second passenger in Estrada’s four-door sedan – 19-year-olf Anna Morales of Sunnyside – also escaped injury.

All four of the people in the two vehicles, according to the WSP, were wearing safety restraints at the time of the accident.

The Audi was totaled. Moreno’s Ford pick-up sustained considerable damage.
