Bids for gym repairs sought

MABTON – The Mabton School Board on Monday authorized ALSC Architects and Hill International to advertise for bids to repair the old Mabton High School gym.

The gym has not been in use since 2012 because of a structural failure.

The architects estimate the base construction will cost a little more than $680,600. To raise the roof to meet WIAA standards for volleyball, another $25,000 in costs are estimated.

Steven Walther of ALSC said, “We know that the construction is much like building a ship inside a bottle because of the gym’s location.”

He said it is unknown if the insurance will cover the cost of raising the roof.

Advertising for bids will begin in February and the Mabton School Board will hold a special meeting to approve the final bid proposal.

The project will begin shortly after the bid is approved with an anticipated construction completion date in August.

The school board authorized the advertisement for bids by a 4-0 vote.
