CONNELL – Although the host Eagle soccer team gave a valiant fight this past Saturday, it was Mabton that prevailed 2-0.
The visiting Vikings took control of the ball early and often, making a total of 10 scoring attempts.
Mabton hit pay dirt twice.
The first goal came in the 28th minute when defender Dario Ochoa of the Vikes took the ball away from an Eagle offensive player. Ochoa cleared the ball from the defensive end of the field and it sailed over the Connell keeper’s leg to hit the back of the net.
“We had a good game,” said Mabton Coach Junior Garcia.
He said the Vikings were passing well and taking advantage of the attack when necessary.
Mabton maintained the 1-0 lead through most of the match.
The second goal was made with just nine minutes until the closing whistle. Oscar Aguilar maneuvered the ball past the Eagles’ defense and delivered it to Jose Gonzalez, who shot it past the keeper and in between the crossbars to give Mabton the 2-0 victory.
“I was happy with how well the team played for the win,” said Garcia.
Connell attempted to score eight times, but Mabton keeper Jose Camacho shut the door on each of the shots.
Mabton (5-5) today (Tuesday) will host Ki-Be.
