GRANDVIEW – A fire that started in a small shop consumed two buildings, including a nearby barn, in the 1000 block of South County Line Road near Grandview this past Saturday morning.
Just before 11:30 a.m. the owner of the structures alerted firefighters to the blaze.
Yakima County Fire District #5 personnel, assisted by Benton County Fire District #3, arrived on scene to find the shop and the adjacent barn completely involved in fire, according to officials.
“An aggressive defensive attack was utilized to suppress the fire and keep it from spreading to other adjacent structures,” said YCFD #5 Battalion Chief Ken Shipman.
He said the owner, Danny Penwell, reported he was working in the shop when he smelled smoke. Penwell investigated the smell and found fire near the ceiling of the shop.
Shipman said the fire quickly spread throughout the shop before reaching the barn.
In addition to the loss of the barn and the shop, three nearby vehicles sustained heat damage. The total estimated value of the loss is $75,000.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Yakima County Fire Marshall.
No injuries were sustained during the blaze, which was under control at approximately 12:15 p.m.
