Catholics celebrate the holidays with special services in S’side

The annual novena for the Our Lady of Guadalupe celebration is underway at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 920 S. Sixth St., Sunnyside.

Each evening through Dec. 11, the novena will be held at 6 p.m. at the church on the weekdays. The rosary will be celebrated at 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 7 and 8 p.m. Bishop Emeritus Carlos Sevilla, SJ, will lead the novenas.

A 5 a.m. mass will be held to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Thursday, Dec. 12. Preceding the early morning mass will be a dinner and dance beginning at 3 a.m. The food, entertainment and games will start again at 3 p.m. on Thursday afternoon and continue until 8:30 p.m.

The church will also celebrate Posadas beginning Monday, Dec. 16, and continuing each evening at 6 p.m. through Christmas Day. The Posada service symbolizes Joseph and Mary’s search for lodging in the days leading up to the birth of Jesus Christ.

St. Joseph Catholic Church youth will also hold a food drive on Sunday, Dec. 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Donations may be taken to Sunnyside’s Daily Sun News, 600 S. Sixth St., or to La Fogata Restaurant, 1204 E. Yakima Valley Highway, Sunnyside. All non-perishable foods will be donated to the parish food bank.
