Greyhounds secure 3-1 victory over Othello

GRANDVIEW - This past Saturday's match against Othello went Grandview's way again.

The 'Hounds early in the season bested the Huskies 3-2 in overtime during a non-league match-up. This past Saturday the teams didn't see overtime, but Grandview did repeat its performance, defeating the visiting Huskies by a 3-1 score.

Othello put the ball into the net early in Saturday's game. At the 7-minute mark, midfielder Rodrigo Zuniga of the Huskies took advantage of a loose ball and found an opening in Grandview's defense to place it in the back of the net.

That was the only goal the Greyhounds allowed to get away from them.

Grandview intensified its defensive pressure to keep Othello's offense from gaining momentum.

It took the Greyhounds eight minutes, but they responded with a goal of their own to equalize the match. Jesus Silva of Grandview lined himself up and landed an exquisitely placed shot directly between the crossbars for the goal.

"Othello's keeper, Angel Rangel, had no chance of stopping (the shot)," said Grandview Coach Anne Holden.

The teams remained in deadlock at intermission.

"Coming out of the break, though, the 'Hounds put on a great display of controlled, efficient and entertaining football," Holden said.

"The guys kept the ball on the ground and used their speed and passing combinations to force Othello into chase mode," she said of Grandview's strategy.

Holden said she was impressed with the intensity of play from the Greyhounds.

Ricardo Serrato and Martin Barragan each scored goals in the closing half.

Barragan provided Serrato with an assist at the 54-minute mark and Serrato hit pay dirt.

Samuel Cuevas found Barragan four minutes later for Grandview's third and final goal of the match.

Grandview made nine scoring attempts and keeper Elmer Campuzano shut the Huskies down on four shots on goal.

Rangel made six saves, while Othello's offense knocked on the goal five times.

Grandview (6-1, 10-2) will host Selah tomorrow (Tuesday) for a non-league match-up.
