Cougars too quick for Sunnyside Christian

WHITE SWAN - The state-ranked 2B White Swan Cougars sent the visiting Sunnyside Christian Knights home last night with a head-hanging 55-40 loss.

The 1B Knights knew before Tuesday evening's non-league game that the White Swan boys basketball team was extremely quick. The game plan, said SCHS Coach Dean Wagenaar, was to control the tempo, " turn it into a half-court game.

"We didn't do that," he said.

The Cougs, deploying a 1-2-2 pressing defensive coverage, forced Sunnyside Christian into coughing up the ball 15 times in the first half. Most of those turnovers came at the mid-court area, after the Knights had already advanced the ball past the half-court line.

"We committed a lot of bad turnovers, which in turn led to a lot of easy transition buckets for them," said Wagenaar.

The result was a huge 32-17 deficit the Knights took into the locker room at intermission.

After the halftime break Sunnyside Christian did a much better job of protecting the basketball, as White Swan was only able to come away with two steals. "We adapted to their quickness, but by then it was a little too late," Wagenaar said.

The one positive the Knights could take from last night's game was controlling White Swan's offensive attacks when Sunnyside Christian was in its half-court defensive coverage. "We contained them pretty well with that," said Wagenaar.

Pacing White Swan offensively was the duo of Lawrence Fiander and Johnny Zuniga, who popped in 18 and 13 points, respectively.

The two players in double figures for Sunnyside Christian were Trevor Wagenaar and Brandon Broersma with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Teammate Jackson Haak added a nine-point performance, and the Knights also got four points from Alex Brouwer and two apiece from Wyatt Hoff and Drew Puterbaugh.

Sunnyside Christian, now 8-6 overall on the season, is scheduled to host both Yakama Tribal and Lyle/Wishram this coming Friday and Saturday.
