Jennie's Journey

Mystery meeting organizer a no-show

Nobody knows its origins, but last week there was quite a frenzy in the community after several citizens received a notice in the mail regarding a block watch meeting.

The agenda wasn't some mundane "let's talk about crime and how we can work together" agenda. Planned were two items regarding the mayor's support, or lack of, for block watch groups.

That is why there was a buzz about town.

The Daily Sun News was interested because of the mystery surrounding the mailing, as well as the agenda items.

Speaking to city officials, the police department has no say in what is discussed at block watch meetings. Also, there is a community member who agreed to coordinate efforts between block watch groups, bringing them together as a network. That individual said he was mystified as to the origins of the mailing, as well.

Further deepening the mystery was that those who allow the venue to be used for such meetings had not received a reservation for the hall in question.

The agenda items, a no-confidence vote and a recommendation for a new mayor further confounded the mystery because the mayor's position is decided upon by city council consent.

Mayor Jim Restucci, when queried after this buzz began circulating around town, said his role is to set the council meetings and agendas, as well as to preside over said meetings. His reach is no longer than any other council members beyond that scope.

Therefore, the decision to support block watch groups in whatever way is made by the council as a whole, some of whom are members of local block watch groups, themselves.

As the word spread that there was a meeting scheduled, so too did the curiosity of the community.

The Daily Sun News sent a reporter to the designated venue at the specified time. No one else showed up.

But, I must let three individuals know I appreciate them checking up on me while I waited on that rainy night for "something" to happen. You know who you are.

This begs the question as to why anyone set such a ridiculous agenda, and paid the postage to mail the notifications out. Was it a joke? Or, did they just slink away into the night after figuring out they were so far off base with their original intentions?

Either way, this reporter didn't find it very funny.
