Alert Grandview citizen credited for police finding assault weapon

GRANDVIEW - Yesterday (Sunday) during a routine traffic stop in Grandview police recovered an assault rifle.

A police officer was responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the area of Munson Lane and South Division Street just before 11 p.m. last night when the incident occurred. The officer located the vehicle and stopped it.

Three individuals were inside the vehicle. They have been identified as Cristian R. Bedolla-Bautista, 19, of Cheney; David A. Mendoza Jr., 28, of Grandview; and Luis V. Farias, 23, of Sunnyside.

The three suspects were held at gunpoint during the traffic stop because the officer spotted a rifle in the back of the vehicle.

"A loaded AK 47-style rifle was in the back seat floor area," said Assistant Police Chief Mark Ware.

He said it is unknown what the suspects planned to do with the rifle.

The three individuals were taken into custody. Bedolla-Bautista is facing charges of driving under the influence and trespassing. Requested charges against Mendoza include loaded firearm in a vehicle and trespassing. Farias is facing charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and trespassing.

Ware said the trespassing charges are the result of the vehicle being parked on private property during the stop.

It is unknown whether or not the incident was gang-related, but Ware believes the officers investigating the case "may have averted a shooting of some sort.

"We credit this accomplishment to the citizen who called in about 'suspicious circumstances.' Sometimes that's all it takes," said Ware.

Grandview police have also since last Friday been alerted to an attempted burglary in the 700 block of Wolfe Lane during which a screen to a window had been removed, but entry was not made.

Police have also responded to two traffic stops, a reported assault, two suspicious activity calls, a traffic mishap, two automatic alarms, two domestic violence calls and four requests for agency assistance.

Officers, too, served an arrest warrant.
