Longtime stylist to retire

Joyce Wyckoff, owner of Neva's Beauty Salon on South Sixth Street in Sunnyside, is hanging up her scissors tomorrow (Friday).

The longtime stylist has spent 46 years making her clientele look their best. Of those years, 38 have been spent caring for the hair of community members in Sunnyside.

In May 2008, Wyckoff purchased Neva's Beauty Salon from Phyllis Wheeler. Now, she will be handing the keys to Mimi Garcia of Grandview.

Wyckoff said Garcia will be changing the name of the salon to Mimi's Salon, but stylist Becky Hildebrand will still be serving clients there.

"Mimi takes over the salon next Tuesday," said Wyckoff.

Wyckoff will give her last perm, snipping the last lock of hair tomorrow, and said her retirement will be spent finding more time for her husband Karl and the couple's grandchildren.

She said the clients at Neva's have become like family. "They've shared much of their lives with me throughout the years...I am very appreciative for their patronage," she said.

As for grand send-offs, Wyckoff doesn't have any special plans. She said she doesn't seek much attention.

"I think I am the type to generally blend in the woodwork," she laughed.
