Berta R. "Chata" Acevedo, 98, of Mabton passed away on Monday, March 7, 2011, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.

Berta was born Dec, 12, 1912 in Piedras Negras Coh., Mexico, the daughter of Hilario and Adelfa (Pena) Ramos.

On Jan. 28, 1928 she married Benjamin Acevedo in Eagle Pass, Texas, where they made there home until moving to Washington in 1940s, settling in Mabton.

She will be greatly missed by her children, grandchildren and friends.

Berta is survived by her children, Leonarda Gutierrez and Berta Gutierrez, both of Seattle, Estella (Rene) Guerra and Rolando (Linda) Acevedo, all of Warden, Pete (Hortencia) Acevedo of Fontana, Calif., Delia Trevino of Mabton, Christina Herrera of Portland, Ore.; one granddaughter, Anna (Jesse) Hernandez of Pasco whom she raised; two special great-grandchildren, Ramon Moncivaiz and Anika Zamora; 38 grandchildren; and numerous great- grandchildren; and one sister, Maria Luna of Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Benjamin Acevedo; and three sons, Humberto Acevedo, Francisco Acevedo and Benjamin Acevedo Jr.

Viewing and visitation will be held Thursday, March 10, 2011, from 5 to 8 p.m., with a Rosary to be recited at 6 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, March 11, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mabton, with burial to follow at Mabton Cemetery.
