Storage building razed

The Sunnyside Fire Department since last Friday has assisted Yakima County Fire District #5 with two fires.

The first fire was to a structure in the 3600 block of Sunnyside-Mabton Highway last Friday at approximately 12:45 p.m.

Capt. Ken Robillard of Yakima County Fire District #5 said a storage building was ablaze when firefighters arrived at the scene.

"Smoke and flames were coming out the sides and it was about one-third involved," he said.

Robillard said firefighters battled the blaze and contained it approximately two hours after arriving on scene. They spent another two hours cleaning up and checking for hot spots.

"The structure and its contents were a total loss," he said, estimating the damage at $50,000.

Robillard said the fire is believed to have been the result of children playing with matches.

In addition to the Sunnyside Fire Department's assistance, three other stations responded to the blaze, as did Pacific Power and the Washington State Patrol.

A brush fire at Washout and Erickson roads required manpower provided by Sunnyside firefighters this past Sunday at approximately 9 p.m. Further details were not available.

Sunnyside firefighters have also since last Friday provided two citizen assists, responded to a vehicle fire that was out on arrival, investigated a smoke complaint and responded to a false alarm.

Also, eight citizens have since Friday requested medical aid. Four of the patients treated by paramedics with the Sunnyside Fire Department were transported to Sunnyside Community Hospital by ambulance. Five other patients were transported from the hospital to other medical facilities.
