Antonio Valdez, 63, of Mabton passed away on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, at Yakima Regional Hospital.

Antonio was born Sept. 7, 1947 in Colima, Mexico, the son of Atenogenes and Fidelia (Avala) Valdez.

He moved to Visalia, Calif., in 1968 and later settled in the Yakima Valley, in 1997.

In 2001 Antonio married Maria Brito in Mabton.

Antonio worked as a laborer and mechanic for various farmers in the Yakima Valley until due to failing health was forced to retire.

He enjoyed working on his cars, listening to music, family barbecues and driving the cotton machine while working in California.

He is survived by his wife, Maria Valdez of Mabton; two brothers, Jesus (Minerva) Valdez of Mabton and Miguel (Debra) Valdez of Pittsburg, Pa.; four sisters, Maria R. Valdez, Maria Nava and Raquel Ochoa all of California, and Margarita Arteaga of Mexico; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and one sister.

Viewing and visitation will be held Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011, from 2 to 8 p.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 6 p.m., at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mabton, with burial to follow at Mabton Cemetery.

Smith Funeral Home LTD and Crematory in Sunnyside is in charge of arrangements.
