Sunnyside firefighters extinguish house fire

Early this morning (Monday) Sunnyside firefighters recuperating from fighting a fire in Mabton responded to a house fire alarm in the 1300 block of South 11th Street in Sunnyside.

The Sunnyside Fire Department was dispatched to the scene of the blaze just after 4:30 a.m.

A single story home was heavily involved with fire upon arrival, according to Battalion Chief Bill Harris.

He said the first line of attack was from a defensive stance, but soon after the firefighters went on the offensive.

"We extinguished the fire within 20 minutes," said Harris.

He said approximately 50 percent of the home was destroyed by the blaze, but estimated monetary damage had not been determined as of press time.

"It's unknown where the fire originated," Harris said, stating the origin and cause of the fire are under investigation.

Since last Thursday firefighters have also responded to requests for a welfare check, a citizen assist and a controlled burn.

Paramedics with the Sunnyside Fire Department have been requested for 14 medical aid calls. Of those receiving medical care, 10 were transported to Sunnyside Community Hospital by ambulance.

Four other patients were transported from the hospital to other medical facilities.
