Mabton pulls out 3-1 win at Goldendale

GOLDENDALE - Mabton Girls Soccer Coach Lucia Tovar was disappointed with how her team opened last night's match-up in Goldendale, but her team woke up in the second half to come away with a 3-1 win.

She said the Timberwolves were allowed to play their game in the opening half because the Lady Vikings failed to place pressure on the home team. Mabton also failed to take opportunities to score, when those opportunities presented themselves.

"It was a very slow start for the Lady Vikings...we were an unrecognizable team," said Tovar.

Mabton still dominated on the field during the first half, but Goldendale scored the first goal. The ball was chipped to Carlee Wheelon and she maneuvered herself into a one versus goalie position to score.

"It was frustrating," said Tovar.

The Lady Vikings came alive after the half, wanting to score and looking for opportunities to capitalize upon.

The first opportunity presented itself at the 65-minute mark. Esmeralda Aviles of the Lady Vikes passed the ball to Micalyn Williams and Williams took it past the Timberwolves defense to get her team on the board.

Two minutes later it was Mabton's Alma Leon who scored off a pass from her sister Jessica.

Mabton gained the 2-1 advantage and didn't let up.

The team continued to pressure Goldendale and with two minutes left in the match Williams, the Leon sisters and Jazzee Sustaita passed the ball back and forth to one another, leading Alma Leon to the goal. She made the goal, slipping the ball past the Goldendale keeper.

"It was a nice use of teamwork and I was really impressed with the way they were able to talk and move to make such a goal happen," Tovar said of what she witnessed.

Mabton had 15 shots on goal and keeper Baylie Tyus had two saves.

Tomorrow (Saturday) Mabton (2-3, 3-6-1) will host the LaSalle Lightning. The action begins at 2 p.m.
