House fire on Sunnyside-Mabton Highway results in estimated $125,000 loss

A home and much of its contents were destroyed last Friday in a structure fire in the 3500 block of Sunnyside-Mabton Highway just outside Sunnyside.

Yakima County Fire District No. 5 firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire just before 11 a.m. to find the home, a single-story wood-framed structure, ablaze.

The home was fully involved with flames and smoke upon the arrival of firefighters, according to Bo Thomas, a captain with Yakima County Fire District No. 5.

He said three stations responded to the blaze and went on a defensive attack.

Once the smoke was cleared and the inferno extinguished, it was determined approximately $125,000 damage was sustained.

It took firefighters approximately half an hour to extinguish the fire. Yakima County Fire District No. 5 was assisted by the Sunnyside Fire Department, Yakima County Sheriff's Office, Washington State Patrol and the Yakima County Fire Marshal's Office.

The fire marshal's office and the Yakima County Sheriff's Office are investigating the fire as a possible arson.
