Sun Valley expansion work bid approved

A project to expand Sun Valley Elementary School took a step forward last night, Thursday, when the Sunnyside School Board accepted a bid from T.W. Clark Construction of Spokane.

A total of 20 bids were submitted for the project, which will add a total of 17,000 square feet to the school.

The board accepted T.W. Clark's contract bid of $3.48 million, just below the $3.8 million the school district budgeted for construction.

Construction on Sun Valley is expected to wrap up before the 2010-11 school year starts this fall.

The project not only affects students at the school but throughout the district.

That's because a new wing will be added to Sun Valley that will allow it to house all of the school district's kindergarten and handicapped pre-school classes.

Also planned for the elementary school is a new multipurpose room and a kitchen.

Angela Watts is the Sunnyside School District's executive director of finance and operations. She told the school board last night that the contract with T.W. Clark includes a clause for a $500 penalty for each day construction is behind schedule.

Watts said the clause is not implemented if the school district and its architect are not on schedule with their responsibilities associated with expanding Sun Valley Elementary School.
