Maltos qualifies for State tourney

KENNEWICK - Sunnyside High School's Maleesha Maltos qualified for the 3A State bowling tourney yesterday, Tuesday, with a second-place finish at the Regional bowling tournament hosted by Spare Time Lanes in Kennewick.

Maltos had to go through two bowl-offs in order to advance to State, the first Lady Grizzly to do so in nearly 10 years.

In regulation play, Maltos bowled games of 157, 167 and 139 to end with a total of 463.

Maltos was tied with another bowler after three games and they were still tied after the first bowl-off, before she pulled ahead for good in the second extra session.

Sunnyside Coach Tina Peabody said Sunnyside as a squad finished the four-team regional event with third place honors.

The top two highest individual finishers among both the 3A and 4A regionals advanced to State.

No team scores were available from the event.

There was additional good news for the Lady Grizzlies, as Peabody was named the league's Coach of the Year, while Maltos and teammate Ileana Martinez earned second-team all-league honors.

Sunnyside's Amanda Villareal earned honorable mention recognition.
