Lady Grizzly keglers upend Ellensburg, 3-1

Senior Maleesha Maltos rolled a 314 two-game series, the top individual effort on the day, to power the Sunnyside High School girls bowling team to a 3-1 victory over Ellensburg yesterday afternoon.

Bowling at Sunnyside's Valley Lanes, the Lady Grizzly keglers improved their season record to 4-5. Sunnyside has three matches remaining before the Tuesday, Jan. 26, District tournament.

The Lady Grizzlies opened yesterday's competition by winning the first two head-to-head match-ups.

In game one, junior Nataly Alvarez bowled a team-high 164 to lead Sunnyside to a 735-588 victory. Sophomore Amanda Villarreal and senior Ileana Martinez added efforts of 150 and 146, respectively, with Marissa Martin and Maltos rounding out the Sunnyside scoring with performances of 139 and 136, respectively.

Ellensburg's top bowler in the opening game was sophomore Shilo Epenesa. She rolled a 153.

Game two, Maltos carried the banner for Sunnyside, notching the top score on the day, a 178. Coupled with a pair of 140's from Villarreal and Martin, a 127 from Martinez and a 123 from Alvarez, the Lady Grizzlies prevailed over Ellensburg, 708-617.

Junior Lexi Poyer had the top effort for the Bulldogs in the second game, a 162.

Ellensburg rebounded to make it a 2-1 match by winning the first of two Baker games, 136-133. Baker bowling requires each member of the five-girl squads to alternate taking turns throughout the 10 frames.

Sunnyside earned the team victory, however, by winning the second Baker game, 129-115.

In JV action yesterday, Sunnyside also claimed a 3-1 win over the Ellensburg junior varsity. The top performer for the JV Lady Grizzlies was Ya Ya Gonzalez with games of 148-127.

The Lady Grizzly bowlers return to action next Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Yakima's Minda Lanes against Selah.
