Black smoke fills the air in Sunnyside Easter afternoon

What started as a grass fire on property at 3470 Outlook Road near Sunnyside yesterday (Sunday) became somewhat explosive as tires were involved.

Yakima County Fire District #5 was dispatched to the fire just after 2:30 p.m. and immediately took a defensive approach.

"Because of the wind and the hazardous smoke we began protecting a garage and home on the property until additional units arrived," shared Capt. Joel Byam.

Once support arrived on scene, he said firefighters were able to go on the offensive.

He said there were some inoperable boats and cars on the property, but the main cause of concern was two refrigeration trailers and a semi tractor on the property. The trailers had been used for storing miscellaneous goods, including furniture and tires.

The tires filled the sky with a hazardous black smoke and as they reached extreme temperatures, the scene became explosive.

"Some debris went flying into the air as they exploded," shared Byam.

In spite of the conditions, the firemen were able to contain the blaze by 5:30 p.m.

It is unknown what caused the fire and Byam said the fire marshal is investigating the incident.

The property owners listed by Yakima County are Vincente and Cricelia Reyes.
