Sunnyside's Promise has new director

A familiar face was introduced last night as the executive director of Sunnyside's Promise.

Mark Baysinger, a 1978 SHS grad, was introduced as the executive director during a gang reduction meeting held Monday night at Cornerstone Assembly of God Church.

Sunnyside's Promise hired Baysinger to the post a couple of weeks ago after he previously worked with a youth program administered through Yakima Valley Farmworkers Clinic. While with the youth program, Baysinger said he worked with at-risk youth.

Now he's turning his attention to his hometown.

"This is a great segue," he said of transitioning from administering a youth program to serving as executive director with Sunnyside's Promise, which works with youth and youth programs in the community.

"Having grown up here it's changed so much," Baysinger said. "It's nice to contribute back to Sunnyside in a positive way."

Baysinger also praised the grassroots gang reduction initiative in Sunnyside, through which Sunnyside's Promise has seen programs like summer art in the park and a bicycle repair program take root.

Baysinger has hit the ground running, noting that a new Sunnyside's Promise office is in the works at 714 E. Edison Ave. in the lower portion of the Bell and Bridges accounting office.

A grand opening is being planned when the office opens.

Baysinger said another priority in these first few weeks has been "working on re-establishing our mission statement."

In other news from last night's meeting, it was announced that any day now the Lucky 7 Bikes program will be moving into a shop provided by Sunnyside Grace Brethren Church. To date the program has 80 bikes available to help teach children in making bike repairs and, eventually, getting their own bike.

Also last night, there was a discussion about finding suitable land for adult soccer fields. Land near the Law and Justice Center was among the locations considered.
