Greyhounds win thre matches at Spokane tourney

SPOKANE - The Grandview High School girls volleyball team competed in the Spokane Crossover Classic volleyball tournament this past Saturday, winning half of the six matches it played.

"It was a busy day," Grandview Coach John LaFever said.

The format of the tournament was the best two out of three games to decide the match.

The Greyhounds started out with two losses, losing to Wenatchee 25-14, 25-21 and Skyview High School, 25-13, 25-22.

Skyview is ranked in the top 10 for 4A schools.

Grandview then stormed back to win three straight matches. The Lady 'Hounds beat Connell 25-17, 25-11; then beat 4A Pasco 25-27, 25-18, 15-9 before edging Idaho's Priest River High School 25-23, 25-22.

Grandview ended the tournament with a loss to 4A Eisenhower, which is also ranked in the top 10 statewide, 25-13, 19-25, 15-10.

LaFever said it wasn't a bad day, going 3-3 on the day and playing four 4A teams with two of them ranked in the top 10.

"We got some things to work on," LaFever said. "We were able to test some defensive things and will upgrade them this week."

Adriana Ramos paced the Greyhounds with 38 kills on the day. She also had eight blocks and six digs.

"She played extremely well," LaFever said of Ramos.

Haley Smasne had 23 kills, five blocks, five assists, nine service points and two aces on the day. Payton Parrish added 15 kills, four blocks, 37 assists, 23 service points, six aces and 15 digs.

Teammate Brandi Atkinson finished her day with 45 assists, six digs and 11 service points. Gabby Sauve had 39 service points, six aces and 48 digs. Crystal Navarro added 20 service points, two aces and 22 digs for Grandview.

LaFever said his team will work on its defense this week, paying special attention to spiking.

"We have a good idea of the things we need to do," he added.

Grandview will travel to face the Ellensburg Bulldogs on Tuesday, Oct. 13, for a 7 p.m. match.
