Homeless shelters in Sunnyside on hold

The fourth annual Extreme Winter Weather Shelter Program is on hold in Sunnyside as organizers attempt to locate homeless shelters in town for the winter.

Program organizer Dave Hanson said the project is still waiting for local churches to come forward and donate space.

"That's the first step, to have churches step forward," Hanson said.

The project is organizing four shelters in Yakima and two in Sunnyside. He said it is important to have shelters in Sunnyside because a homeless count last January showed 498 homeless people in Sunnyside compared with 418 in Yakima.

"Yakima has a number of shelter solutions that Sunnyside doesn't have," he added.

The shelters in Yakima are slated to open in mid-November, or when overnight temperatures get low enough.

Hanson is asking for any churches in the area interested in donating space for the winter to call him at 509-901-9402.
