Loss to Burbank ends Lady Vikings' season

ZILLAH - The Mabton High School girls basketball team built up a large lead against the Burbank Coyotes last Friday night before succumbing to a fourth-quarter Burbank comeback, losing 69-64 in overtime and getting knocked out of the SCAC District Tournament.

In the first half, it was all Vikings.

"We came out and executed our game plan," Mabton Coach Chris McCallum said.

McCallum said his team had played the Coyotes earlier in the season and had beaten them by 15 points. McCallum knew from that game that his team would have to watch out for Burbank's Tiffany Idler and Nicole Roberts.

"We tried to limit their touches," he said. "We did a good job of that in the first half."

Mabton jumped out to a 14-10 first quarter lead and increased that to a 32-20 halftime advantage.

Using a 1-3-1 defense the Lady Vikings were able to keep Idler in check, holding her to just 11 first half points.

At halftime Burbank made some adjustments and decided to ride their two horses, Idler and Roberts. McCallum said he then decided to switch to a 2-3 zone.

"That was my mistake," McCallum said.

Idler ate up the 2-3 zone and exploded for 23 second half points, including 12 in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Vikings also started to get into foul trouble. Mabton's Cyrsta Reynolds had to sit most of the fourth quarter due to fouls and three starters were put out of the game in the fourth due to fouls.

Turnovers were also a factor. McCallum said his team committed more than 30 turnovers in the game with at least 18 of them coming in the second half.

Burbank cut Mabton's 12-point halftime lead down to eight points to start the fourth quarter and tied it at 60 points apiece at the end of regulation.

The Coyotes then outscored the Vikings 9-4 in the extra session to win the game and eliminate Mabton from postseason play.

"The girls hustled," McCallum said. "They did a good job of rebounding. The game came down to free throws and turnovers. We just ran out of firepower at the end."

The Lady Vikings finish their season with a record of 17-6.
