Race shaping up for Port of Sunnyside seat

After just the first day of candidate filing a race has already been established for the Port of Sunnyside, district 3 seat.

Yesterday, Monday, incumbent St. Clair Woodworth and challenger Jim Grubenhoff both signed up to campaign for the seat.

Woodworth is in his 19th year as a Port of Sunnyside commissioner. The lifelong Sunnyside resident is semi-retired from farming. He and his wife Mariea have five sons. Woodworth said he initially decided to run for the office after he was encouraged by others. "I wanted to see if I could make a difference and I feel I have," he said.

Grubenhoff is also a lifelong Sunnyside resident and owner of Harold's Repair and Rental. "It's something I've contemplated for a number of years," he says of running for a port position. "I'm very interested in economic development and the port has been instrumental in developing a lot of things." Grubenhoff and his wife Kathy have five children.

Also filing for public office was Nick Paulakis, who is seeking the Sunnyside City Council's district four seat.

Paulakis is a pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Sunnyside and teaches auto shop at Sunnyside High School. Paulakis said he is running for office with a focus on education, addressing the city's gang problem and "cleaning up our town."

The only other filings for office were from incumbents. Over in Grandview, city councilwomen Joan Souders and Diana Jennings filed in a bid to retain their position 1 and position 6 seats, respectively.

David Taylor of Moxee filed to retain the 15th District legislative seat he was appointed to earlier this summer.

Also seeking to retain an appointed seat, Jim Hagarty yesterday issued a press release announcing his intention to run for the Yakima County Prosecutor post he was appointed to earlier this year.

Candidate filings for office will continue through this Friday.
