The Bickleton Lady Pirates varsity opened their season with two victories this past weekend.
On Friday night, the Pirates headed to Riverside Christian, where Katelynn Clinton had a triple-double with a game-high 20 points, 10 steals and 11 rebounds, contributing to Bickleton's 43-15 win over Riverside's JV.
It wasn't until the second half, though, that Bickleton hit its stride.
"The second half, we really came out on fire," said Bickleton Coach Emily Barnhart. "For the first half, we did everything right, we just couldn't put the ball in the basket."
Lady Pirate Morgan McBride scored five points, had seven steals and seven rebounds. Teammate Star Kibby scored 13 points, Aymie Osborne scored three, Haley Goodnight scored two and Jamie Venema had seven steals.
Saturday night's 53-44 win over the Mabton JV was hard fought, Barnhart said.
"These girls were just not going to give it up to us," Barnhart said of Mabton.
Bickleton gained a 17-4 lead in the first quarter, then held on for dear life for the remainder of the night, even with only five players in the last five minutes of the game because three Lady Pirates had fouled out.
"The girls had a hard time with their real tight, physical defense," said Barnhart.
Despite this, Clinton tallied 25 points on the night, nine steals and 13 rebounds. Star Kibby tallied 16 points and 10 steals and Venema scored four points and tallied seven rebounds. Osborne scored five points, Nakai Kibby scored two and Goodnight scored one.
Barnhart believes this past Saturday's experience served as a learning curve for the Lady Pirates, who will be a little better prepared to square off against Mabton's JV team this coming Thursday.
