Alta May Schlosser, 84, of Grandview and a long-time Valley resident, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009, at her son's home in Grandview.

May was born April 22, 1925 in Sparks, Neb., the daughter of Wesley and Cleo (Campbell) Butler.

At an early age, she with her parents moved to Richland, where May received her education and graduated from high school. She later attended nursing school, which helped her in her working career as an in- home care giver. On Feb. 6, 1948 she married John D. "Jack" Schlosser in Sunnyside.

May, with others, was the first to start Senior Chore Service in the Lower Yakima Valley.

She enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping and sewing. May loved collecting rocks and would have all of her family bring back rocks to her from their travels.

May is survived by Cleo (Don) Ludwig of Redmond, Ore., Walter (Diana) Schlosser of Grandview, John D. "Dan" Schlosser of Sunnyside, Donald R. "Don". Schlosser of Midland, Texas, Carolyn (Larry) Estabrook of Sunnyside; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and four brothers, Othel "Del" Butler, Wesley LaMoine Butler, Roland "Pete" Butler and Burtis "Burt" Butler.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John D. "Jack" Schlosser; one grandson, Larry Estabrook; three brothers, Homer Butler, Chester Butler and Alton Butler.

Viewing and visitation will be held Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009, from 9 a.m. to noon at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Graveside funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009 at 1 p.m. at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside.
