Partida qualifies for girls 3A Regional tourney

YAKIMA - First-year golfer Sarasa Partida, only a sophomore, has qualified to play at next Monday's 3A Regional tournament.

The top 12 golfers at Regionals will advance to the State tourney.

Partida was the lone athlete from this year's five-girl Sunnyside High School golf team to qualify for Regionals. Only the top 28 golfers from 3A Columbia Basin League play advance to the postseason. They will be joined at Regionals by the 12 best golfers from the 3A Greater Spokane League.

Partida and the other Lady Grizzly linksters wrapped up league play yesterday at Yakima's Apple Tree Golf Course. Partida, who had water issues on the back nine Thursday afternoon, struggled into the clubhouse with a not-so glitzy 129. She was on track with her game on the front nine, shooting a 54, but blew up to a 75 after the turn.

Despite the less than stellar performance in her final league match of the season, Partida ended up as the Columbia Basin League's 22nd rated golfer. Only the top 28 advance to Regionals.

"For Sarasa, only a sophomore and in her first year of golf, to qualify for Regionals, that is a huge accomplishment," said Sunnyside Coach Gary Rohde.

Just missing out on a berth to Regionals was Sunnyside's Renea Visser. The freshman edged Partida by a single stroke yesterday, carding a 128 on front and back nines of 68-60. Visser finished league play as the 32nd rated golfer.

"Only one freshman this year from our league qualified for Regionals," said Rohde. "Renea was just four spots out of Regionals.

"Being a freshman this year, Renea, if she sticks with it, should be right there next season," Rohde said.

Also competing for Sunnyside yesterday at Apple Tree were Emily Slinker (73-74-147), Tonnelle Driesen (73-82-155) and Marissa Martin (78-87-165).

Partida will open Regionals at 7:30 a.m. next Monday morning at Kennewick's Canyon Lakes Golf Course. If she makes the cut, she'll golf a second 18 holes Monday afternoon.
