Lady Pirates drop District tourney opener

GOLDENDALE - The Lady Pirates fell 55-36 to Trout Lake/Glenwood in last night's first round of District competition.

According to Bickleton Coach Tom Whitmore, the Lady Pirates struggled with their offense in the first and third quarters of the game.

"Nobody scored in the first three minutes (of the game)," he said of his team's first quarter performance.

Whitmore said he believes both teams were nervous, and the fatigue of his players was evident off and on. Bickleton's girls were forced to play three games in less than a week, due to bad weather cancellations, leading up to District tourney play yesterday.

But, the Lady Pirates impressed him with hard work.

"We were behind by 20 points in the third quarter, but managed to fight back to a 13-point deficit," Whitmore said, stating he felt as though Bickleton might "...turn a corner and catch them (Trout Lake)."

Unfortunately, the team was unable to get the ball to fall when they attempted to score down the stretch.

The high scorer for the Lady Pirates was Katelynn Clinton with 14 points. She also had 11 rebounds, eight of them on the defensive glass.

Teammate Phylicia Pearson scored 11 points and snatched six rebounds from Trout Lake.

The Lady Pirates (10-9) move into the second round of District competition tomorrow (Friday) against Klickitat at Zillah Middle School.

Whitmore said the team is looking forward to the game because they split the regular season games against the Lady Vandals with a 56-33 victory and an overtime loss, 62-59. A win this Friday would advance Bickleton into a game this Saturday with a 1B State berth on the line.
