Mabton girls overcome poor shooting night to defeat Ki-Be, 49-34

BENTON CITY - Mabton's Lady Vikings overcame a huge obstacle, themselves, to claim a 49-34 victory over Ki-Be last night.

"We had a poor shooting night from the field," said Mabton Coach Chris McCallum. "It was one of those ugly wins."

The Lady Vikings only shot 32 percent from the field, 18 percent from the three-point line and 50 percent from the free throw line.

Somehow, said McCallum, "We still scored (almost) 50 points."

Perhaps that's due in large part to senior Trishi Williams, who tallied 25 points and came away with 17 rebounds.

"Trishi was just tough. She was everywhere," McCallum said.

Mabton's Ana Jimenez was on fire in the second quarter, scoring 12 of Mabton's 18 points, compared to just nine points total by Ki-Be that period. The Lady Vikings went into halftime with a 15-point lead.

Come the third quarter, the Lady Vikings saw their lead dwindle. "Ki-Be lives and dies by the three-point line and they had three three's in the third quarter," McCallum said, explaining the Bears outscored his team by one that period.

Mabton iced the game with a 7-6 scoring advantage in the final quarter.

Mabton's Crysta Reynolds ran into foul trouble early in the game and sat out a better part of the second quarter. She finished the night with two points, four assists and four rebounds. "I'd like to see Crysta get about 10 points a game," McCallum said.

Melissa Gutierrez tallied two points for Mabton, as did teammates Terry Flores and Brizi Enriquez. Monica Tellez had six grabs and chipped in four points.

Mabton squares off against Goldendale in its first league game of the season this coming Friday night.
