Matus named Transformation Sunnyside director

Roberto Matus has been appointed to serve as the director of Transformation Sunnyside.

The position is brand new to the growing organization, Matus said. He said the core group determined there was a need for a director toward the end of last year. By early this summer, the core group started advertising for the position.

Matus, the current director of the Salvation Army and pastor of its church in Grandview, was serving as a member of the core group, but recused himself during the interviewing process.

Now, Matus said, "I will be the public face and voice (of Transformation Sunnyside) throughout the community."

First up in the next 90 days is the fact that Transformation Sunnyside will move from having a core group to a board of directors.

"The immediate goal is to create a team atmosphere even better than what we have today," he said. "We're moving people from (being) a loosely based group and emphasizing that we're going to be a cohesive unit.

"This is not a one person job, this is a team effort," he said.

Next, he said, the board will take a course in servant leadership, which stems from the example set by Jesus Christ, he said. "Biblically, Jesus had every reason to be served but he chose to become a servant," Matus said.

As a group, Matus summed up Transformation Sunnyside this way: "What is it that we can do to help advance the purpose of your life?"

He continued, "That's the servant leadership concept that we're talking about. We're going to begin to apply these things throughout the community."

Matus's office will be located in the Valley Truck Repair business, located at 603 SR 241.

"Ed Werkhoven has graciously volunteered an office space to use there."

Matus steps into the role on Sept. 1.
