Gang shooting in Sunnyside sends two youths to hospital

A 17-year-old Sunnyside boy and a 12-year-old girl from Mabton were shot last night in what police believe was a gang related incident.

"It was opposing gang members," Sunnyside Police Detective Sgt. Jeff Cunningham said. "The victims were either gang members or gang associates, that's how we know it was gang related."

According to a press release issued by the Sunnyside Police Department, the two juveniles were walking in the 1200 block of South 15th Street in Sunnyside Monday night at approximately 8:10 p.m.

A Hispanic male wearing black jeans and a black and blue bandanna over his face walked up to the victims, exchanged words, and then pulled out a small caliber gun and shot the victims.

The suspect then fled the area in a black van of unknown make or model. The van was last seen heading north on 15th Street.

The 17-year-old boy was shot in the left thigh and the female victim was shot in her lower lip and right ear. Both were transferred to Sunnyside Community Hospital for treatment.

The 12-year-old girl was released, but due to the bullet hitting so close to a main artery in the male victim's thigh, he was transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for further treatment.

Police are asking anyone with any information to call them at 836-6211.
