Vikings improve league record to 3-0 with dominating performance

MABTON - The Mabton Vikings took over sole possession of first place in the SCAC West standings with a 54-12 win over the Zillah Leopards last night.

Due to two forfeits and two vacant weight classes the meet only featured 10 matches with Mabton getting pins in all seven matches they won.

Mabton's Carlos Mendez (103 lbs.) lost to Skylor Davis when Davis pinned him in 5:03, giving Zillah an early 6-0 lead. It was a lead Zillah would have for one match and never see again the rest of the night.

"We knew Skylor had been doing very well," Mabton Coach John Kilian said.

After that first initial loss the Vikings reeled off four pins in a row and the route was on.

Mabton's Eric Meza (112 lbs.) pinned Alex Gonzalez in 2:58. Meza was up 3-2 when he got the pin.

Luis Aviles (119 lbs.) then pinned Zillah's Ian Williams in a blistering 26 seconds.

"He wasn't messing around," Kilian said of Aviles' performance.

Mabton's Andy Rivera (125 lbs.) got in on the fun, pinning Christian Gutierrez in an almost as fast 30 seconds.

Mabton's Andy Torres (130 lbs.) and Tony Vargas (135 lbs.) each received forfeit wins.

Neither team fielded wrestlers in the 140- and 145-pound weight classes.

Vicente Tovar (152 lbs.) kept Mabton on a roll with his pin over Kyle Tynan in 4:22, giving the Vikings a 36-6 lead.

In the 160-pound weight class, Angelo Salinas lost to Zillah's Kane Koerner 11-4.

"Angelo looked pretty strong at the beginning," Kilian added, "but he fizzled out at the end."

Koerner scored eight points in the final round to come away with the win for Zillah.

Mabton's Adrian Magana (171 lbs.) then lost to Weston Argo 7-1.

"Weston is a State placer from last year," Kilian said. "He's a good, solid wrestler. Adrian kept it close and did a good job."

Damien Marquez (189 lbs.) got Mabton back on track, pinning Rafael Guzman in 2:59. Marquez was up 9-1 when he got the pin.

Robert Marquez (215 lbs.) continued his dominance this season, running his record to 21-0 with a pin over Zillah's Sidney Miller in 44 seconds.

Heavyweight Eli Perez (285 lbs.) added another pin for Mabton, this one in 29 seconds over Eric Kilthau.

"All of our wins were pins," Kilian added. "I'm pretty proud of that."

Mabton (3-0, 5-1) will travel to Royal City Saturday, Jan. 13, to compete in the Royal Rumble.
