Bickleton boys win fifth straight

BICKLETON - The Bickleton boys basketball program only goes eight players deep, but first year Coach Rick Palmer is getting the most from all of them.

Last night, the Pirates cruised to their fifth consecutive victory, whipping an underclassman squad from Riverview High School, 42-26. Bickleton (0-0, 5-0) closes out its non-league schedule at home this coming Thursday against Sunnyside High School's 'C' squad.

In defeating Riverview last night, Bickleton got double-digit scoring from Eric Hess and Cody Loomis, who combined for 27 points. The Pirates also got a nine-point performance from Andrew Venema and a six-point effort from Edgar Molina.

The 6'4" Hess, besides leading his team in the scoring column, also pulled down a game high 14 rebounds. Molina and Loomis scraped down eight and seven boards, respectively.

Defensively, Craig Osborne led a spirited Bickleton charge by coming away with a club high three steals. The Pirates finished the night with seven steals total.

For Riverview, only one player reached double figures in scoring, garnering 11 points.

Palmer was pleased with the performance of his starters last night, but even more importantly, he said, his three reserves more than held their own when spelling the first unit.

"Our three kids on the bench got to play quite a bit last night," said Palmer. "They played very well.

"The experience they're gaining on the floor now will benefit us later in the season," he said of reserves Junior Hernandez, Patrick Maeder and Jarred Spalding.
