Behind the Plate

One of my favorite times of the year

Anybody else feel that? It's spring. It's about time, too.

I hate the cold and I hate snow. I'm not a winter sports enthusiast, so you can understand why I get a little depressed when the leaves start to change and there's a chill in the air. But at least there's football in the fall.

The first snowfall... well, that's it for me. I head into my cave and hibernate in front of my TV, leaving only when I have to for necessities like food, oh yeah, and to work.

It's not just the weather that depresses me. I get tired of the short days.

When it's still dark when I get to work in the morning and it's dark when I leave work in the evening it can be a bit hard to handle not getting to see the sun very much.

But, hey, those days are behind us and the first day of spring is less than two weeks away.

Spring is one of my favorite times of the year. Like I said, I'm not a fan of winter, but I'm really not a fan of summer, either. The months from March to May are good. It's not too hot, it's not too cold.

For the first time in months I can wear a t-shirt and expose my pale, almost transparent skin to sunlight. Keep your sunglasses handy in case you see me outside, I might blind you. Don't worry though, I won't be taking my shirt off for a few more months, so you can keep the welding masks stored - for now.

With spring, though, comes the end of the only thing that keeps me going in the winter - college basketball.

The NCAA tournament starts next week. March Madness and the Final Four are the official end to my sports-watching days for about four months. The NBA Finals may pique my interest if the right teams are playing, but I likely won't watch many sporting events until football starts again in August.

I also watch some Major League Soccer here and there, but baseball? Forget about it. Ironic, considering my name, isn't it?

It's sad but true; my life revolves around my sports-watching schedule.

Then there's video games. Needless to say, more sports games, typically, and poker.

I should get out more and enjoy the warmer weather and with spring almost here and sports almost gone (the important ones anyway) I need to get my behind up and outside.

In just over three weeks we'll spring ahead on our clocks and I'll have an extra hour of daylight. I can't wait.

There's just one thing I need to prepare for the sunlight and warmer temperatures - a jumbo-sized tub of sunscreen.
