G'view grapplers win late-season non-league dual

HANFORD - Though the Grandview wrestling team got a big non-league win this past Friday night against Hanford, 54-21, the Greyhounds may have lost one of their best chances to place a wrestler at State.

Rigo Rodriguez went down with an ankle injury in the third period of his 189-lb. match with Cody Bradshaw.

Bradshaw was leading the match 2-0 with Rodriguez looking to score when he rolled his ankle, which ended the match and gave six points to Hanford, Grandview Coach Jeff Sevigny said.

Sevigny said he wasn't sure what the extent of the injury was, but x-rays were taken and Rodriguez has been icing his ankle since the injury occurred.

The win the Falcons received from the injury default would be one of just a few they'd get all night as Grandview got good production out of weight classes across the board.

Grandview's Santos Guillen got the night off to a good start at 103 lbs. as he pinned Hanford's Matt Granaas in the second period.

Hanford didn't get on the board until Dusty Doya got a close 4-2 decision over Dalton Walker at 119 lbs.

"Dalton came up just short," Sevigny said.

Fernando Godinez's pin at 130 lbs. over Hanford's David Bryan started a run of seven consecutive wins marked by pins at 135 lbs., 140 lbs., 152 lbs. and 171 lbs.

Hanford wouldn't score again until the injury to Rodriguez occurred at 189 lbs.

Overall, Sevigny said despite the injury to Rodriguez, the team looked good and he's not upset about having scheduled a non-league dual so late in the season.

"It was a good, solid win for us," he said. "We got a real good performance out of Santos Guillen at 103."

Sevigny has consistently said that Guillen wrestles with a lot of heart despite the fact that he's undersized, being several pounds under the 103-lb. limit.

The 'Hounds will travel to Othello for the District tournament this Friday and Saturday. The two-day tournament will qualify wrestlers for the Regional tournament in Moses Lake the following weekend.

Sevigny said Rodriguez still might be able to go at Districts despite his injury.
