'Hounds hold off Connell

CONNELL - Grandview's boys basketball team reeled off a 21-9 second quarter run, then held on for a league opening 62-51 win at Connell on Saturday.

After posting an 11-7 edge in the first quarter of the CWAC South opener, C.J. Lopez sparked the Greyhounds with a pair of three-pointers in the second stanza.

"They went to a zone in the second and C.J. was moving, getting himself open and knocking down some shots," said Coach Scott Parrish.

Lopez, on his way to a team-high 15 points, and the rest of the 'Hounds kept the pressure on, literally.

"We pressed them with a man-to-man defense the whole first half," Parrish noted. The pressure tactics worked, forcing the Eagles into 23 turnovers for the game.

Up 32-16 at the half, Grandview switched to a zone press in the third stanza to all but put the game away with a 50-29 lead entering the final eight minutes.

That's when Connell found its second wind to make a run at the Greyhounds.

"They started hitting shots and made it interesting," Parrish said of the soaring Eagles. "And we relaxed a little bit on defense."

Though the 'Hound lead never dipped below 10 in the final stanza, Parrish said he called a timeout to keep his defense focused.

Despite Connell's late surge, Parrish said he was pleased with his team's effort to improve to 1-0 in league and 6-1 overall.

"We just played real good defense," Parrish observed. "I'm happy with the way we played."

Noting Grandview was only edged 28-26 on the boards for the game, Parrish added, "We did a nice job rebounding."

Nathan Zavala added 12 for the Greyhounds and James Vela scored 10. Both led with a team-high five rebounds.

A.J. Valencia turned in a nice all-around game for Grandview, scoring eight points, hauling in four rebounds and dishing out a team-high six assists.

The Grandview boys return to the road this coming Friday when they play at CWAC South league foe Toppenish.
