Routine traffic stop nets three drug arrests

A stop for a routine traffic violation on Sunday, April 9, resulted in three arrests for possession of methamphetamine.

The incident occurred at about 10:10 p.m. in the 700 block of North Avenue in Sunnyside.

After the car was pulled over for the traffic stop, the Sunnyside police officer discovered methamphetamine in the car.

The three people arrested were Desiderio Zuniga, Jr., 22; Zeferino Balderas, 19; and Oscar Trevino, 22. Another man in the car fled the scene and is still missing, said Sunnyside Police Sergeant Kent Coffman.

Two teenage girls also in the car were returned home to their parents.

Police reported that the car the six were riding in was owned by Zuniga, Jr. Authorities learned that the car and Zuniga, Jr., himself, were reported to be suspected in a shooting that took place earlier that same evening in Toppenish.

Zuniga, Jr. and the other two people arrested at the scene were transported to Yakima to be arraigned on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine. Other possible local misdemeanor charges are pending, authorities stated.
