Messmore 10th at Prosser invite

PROSSER - Britany Messmore brought home the top individual finish of all the Sunnyside High School harriers at this past Saturday's Prosser Cross Country Invitational.

Competing on Prosser's 2.9-mile course, Messmore earned a 10th place finish in the girls race. She finished in 20:02.07. She crossed the finish line a minute and five seconds behind the winner, Grandview's Britnee Sanchez, who clocked an 18:57.00.

Hanford won the girls team title at Prosser, accumulating an invite low 43 points. East Valley was a close second with 46 points, with Zillah on their heels for third with 54 points. Sunnyside's girls finish in eighth place with 219 points.

Alyson Waddle had the next highest finish for the Sunnyside girls, clocking a 24:06.49 for 44th place honors. Rounding out the Sunnyside varsity girls scoring were Kelsea Means in 58th place (26:54.46), Julie Wedam in 60th place (27:01.26) and Sara Sanchez in 73rd place (31:36.23).

Sunnyside also fielded a JV girls squad at the Prosser invite, which competed in the varsity race. The junior varsity Lady Grizzly runners included Maribel Sanchez, 56th place in 26:30.50; Christina Fuller, 65th place in 27:47.52; Hali Soto, 70th place in 29:51.99; Maricela Madrigal, 72nd place in 31:35.94; and Amanda Graham, 74th place in 32:27.60.

In Saturday's boys race, Nectaly Barbosa of Prosser won handily, clocking a 15:21.15 on the 2.9-mile course. East Valley's Cameron Brulotte, the runner-up, was a distant second with a clocking of 15:47.90.

Sunnyside's top finisher in the boys race was Sterling Scott. He placed 15th in a time of 16:49.51.

Also competing for Sunnyside were Gracen Gonzalez, 27th in 17:16.48; Jacob Rogers, 35th in 17:55.26; Gilberto Villalobos, 38th in 18:02.93; Zeke Galvan, 46th in 19:11.08; Sam Bardell, 47th in 19:11.37; and Andrew Swinehart, 52nd in 20:02.81.

In the boys team scoring, the Red Devils of East Valley came out on top with an invite low 36 points. Ellensburg, Hanford and Zillah finished second through fourth, respectively, with 73, 80 and 95 points. Sunnyside placed sixth with 156 points.

In the boys JV race on Saturday, the Grizzly runners' top finisher was Mathew Santoy, clocking a 20:02.11 for a 32nd place finish.

The boys JV race winner was East Valley's Todd Heether (17:31.35).
