Third-ranked Selah sweeps S'side

SELAH - Mid-Valley League powerhouse Selah showed why it's the third ranked volleyball team in the 3A ranks, sweeping Sunnyside 3-0 on Thursday.

"Selah's a very hard hitting team, very well-rounded," noted Lady Grizzly Coach Angel Carrizales.

After losing the first game 25-9, Sunnyside rebounded to pull within 8-7 in the second, paced by stellar serving performances from Claire Schilperoort and Alexis Ramos.

But it was all Selah from there, on the way to a 25-14 game two win and a 25-7 match-clinching victory in the third stanza.

Despite the loss, the Lady Grizzlies were successful in accomplishing a team goal of playing better team defense, Carrizales said.

"We wanted to play better team defense and we did," she added. "We slowed down a lot of their balls and we were digging well."

Sunnyside also went on the attack in the loss, led by Christy Linde's 10 kills. "To get that many kills against Selah is impressive," observed Carrizales. "They don't let many balls hit the court."

Melissa Stamschror, a sophomore, got the start at setter for the Lady Grizzlies and delivered 21 assists. Claire Schilperoort had two aces and four kills. Carrizales also praised junior Kerri Urrutia's effort on defense, "Her second half of the season has been extremely strong."

Sunnyside (1-10, 3-14) hosts Wapato next Tuesday in the regular season finale. A win advances the Lady Grizzlies into the district playoffs.
