Sanchez, Mendez place in State

PASCO - Two runners from the Grandview cross-country team participated in the 2A State finals this weekend.

Britnee Sanchez finished her race for the girls in 20th place. The defending state champion started out strong but fell off the pace quickly.

"She probably had her worst race of the year," Grandview Coach Jim Pillers said. "She was very disappointed."

She was going against the best and they were fast, Pillers said. "She just didn't have it that day."

Jose Mendez ran on the boys side. His time of 20.38 was good for 73rd place.

"He ran as well as he could for a freshman," Pillers said. "He learned a lot."

Pillers went on to say it had been a good season.

"It's nice to get a couple of kids to state," he added. "They did the best they could for the day."

Pillers added he is interested to see if Sanchez and Mendez do the required post-season work to get back to the podium next year.
