Elderly S'side woman run over by car dies

A 75-year-old Sunnyside woman, Helen M. Sams, has died as the result of being run over by a car. The driver of the vehicle, according to the Washington State Patrol, was Carl R. Sams, 80, of Sunnyside.

The incident occurred this past Saturday afternoon, at about 3:15 p.m. on East Edison Avenue near the Ray Road intersection. Mrs. Sams died at Yakima Regional Medical Center in Yakima just after 11 a.m. Sunday morning.

WSP troopers report that Mr. Sams was intoxicated at the time of the accident. He was booked at the Sunnyside Police Department. The Washington State Patrol has indicated that a charge of vehicular homicide will be filed.

The report released by the WSP shows that Mrs. Sams, along with bystanders, attempted to get Mr. Sams out of the 1990 Buick Electra he was driving. The Buick was stopped in the eastbound lane of East Edison Avenue when Mrs. Sams exited the car. WSP troopers said she opened the driver's door but Mr. Sams refused to leave the vehicle.

The car was in reverse and backed up after Mr. Sams took his foot off the brake. After he stopped the vehicle, another attempt was made to get him to exit the car. WSP troopers said Mr. Sams took his foot off the brake again and the vehicle accelerated, running over Mrs. Sams.
