Sun Valley drops heartbreaker in tourney opener

SELAH - It was a heartbreaking loss for the Sun Valley 16-18-year-old baseball team in the opening game of the Selah tournament yesterday.

Sun Valley lost 4-3 to a red hot West Valley squad, the younger of the two Yakima-based summer baseball programs from that area.

Joel Zakahi threw another brilliant, complete game for Sun Valley, tossing a three-hitter. But it was what the young hurler gave up at the wrong times that came back to bite him.

"He pitched a great game," said Sun Valley Coach Dave Martinez.

West Valley scored lone runs in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings to win the game. West Valley scored what proved to be the game-winner in the seven-inning affair off a wild pitch by Zakahi with two outs.

Zakahi had three strikeouts, but allowed three walks.

"They didn't hit anything hard," said Martinez of West Valley.

Martinez said West Valley went in with the game plan of sitting on the outside of the plate and knocking all of Zakahi's pitches to right field when they could.

Two of the three walks and two of the three hits Zakahi gave up came around to score.

Zakahi had a pitch count in the high 90s, said Martinez. West Valley did a good job of taking Zakahi deep in the counts in the third, fifth and sixth innings.

Gibby Briones came to the forefront for Sun Valley last night. He was 2-for-3 on the day. He had an RBI double in Sun Valley's two-run third inning. He also scored in the third off a single from Diego Burgueno. Briones also had the first run of the game for Sun Valley, scoring in the top of the first. Briones scored from third when Burgueno hit into a double play.

It was a stellar defensive battle on both sides, as neither team committed an error in the game.

Martinez said while the loss is disappointing, he isn't displeased with the effort put out by his team. Martinez said it was just a matter of West Valley being able to execute at the right times.

Sun Valley (8-12-1) played the Yakima Scarlets at 12:30 p.m. this afternoon (Friday) at the Selah tournament. Sun Valley will be playing in the Selah tournament throughout the weekend.
