Guidelines for sexual health, disease prevention info bad news

This year the legislature could pass into law new code (S-5306, H-1282) that imposes a set of guidelines for sex education on those school districts that have sex education programs. Most do.

The bills basically transfer minimum content of sex education programs from the local school boards to the state. This mandate is also unfunded, so the local school districts get to deal with any associated costs of revising their programs to meet these state guidelines.

The guidelines stress abstinence, but the form of abstinence is far from what is proven healthy. It acknowledges abstinence as a behavior option that a person may choose at various times during life. Today I chose, tomorrow I chose not.

This form of abstinence is circumstantial, it has no substance. It boils down to being selective.

What happened to reserving sex for marriage? This definition is healthy, it is clearly defined and it applies the same whether or not you are married.

The guidelines for sexual health information and disease prevention is bad legislation.
