MOSES LAKE - Derrick Wood of Sunnyside's Black Rock Creek Golf Course turned in a career type round this past Monday.
Competing at a Central Washington chapter of the PGA pro-am tournament at Moses Lake Golf & Country Club, Wood scorched the par-71 course to win top honors among amateur division #2 golfers. Wood carded a six-over 77, besting the next closest competitor in his division by three strokes.
Wood also provided the Black Rock Creek squad with the impetus to place sixth in the team competition. The fivesome of Wood, club pro Jeff Bender, Robbie Goins, Geoff Bowlsby and Greg Smith tallied a 193. A squad from Leavenworth won the team contest, shooting an aggregate 188.
Bender, currently in fifth place in the points standings in this year's Central Washington PGA pro-am tourney series, finished in a two-way tie for fourth place honors Monday in the professional division. Bender fired a two-under 69, three shots behind the winner-Jeff Kent of Eagle View Golf Course.
Former Sunnyside High School golf standout Scott Galbraith, now the club pro at Toppenish's Mt. Adams Country Club, placed second in the professional net division (actual score minus handicap). He shot a handicap-aided 70. Toppenish's Bob Greene tied for sixth in the net scoring column for amateur division #1 golfers with a handicap-aided 69.
