Lady Vikings tied for second in league going into postseason play

MABTON - The Mabton volleyball team was on fire Tuesday night. The girls lit up LaSalle, leaving the team with three straight game losses for the night.

The Lady Vikings blew right past the Lightning, winning the last match of the regular season by scores of 25-14, 25-14, 25-15.

"They were ready to play," Mabton Coach Olivia Mendoza said of her team.

She said Tuesday night was senior night so the team was hyped up before they ever took the floor.

"We just started out on fire," Mendoza said.

She said Mabton played well both offensively and defensively against the visiting LaSalle team.

"We played good volleyball, they served well and their defense was excellent," Mendoza said.

She said her team hit the court ready to play, adding that they were focused and ran their plays well.

"Everything worked out really well," Mendoza said. "They were just ready to play."

Senior Michelle Tellez really helped the Mabton team in their quest to win over LaSalle. Mendoza said Tellez, who had 6 kills and 1 aces for the night, played good offense, adding that she did an equally good job on defense.

"She picked up everything that came to her," Mendoza said.

Also helping out the Lady Vikes was junior Alida Mendoza, who had a good night at the net.

"She had hits, she had blocks, she was just hot," the coach said of Mendoza, who had 6 kills, 4 aces and 5 blocks against LaSalle.

Also putting in good showings against the Lightning were senior Rosa Reyna, who had 3 kills and 4 aces, and setter Mayra Diaz with 11 assists, 4 aces and 2 kills.

The win over LaSalle leaves Mabton tied for second place going into postseason play. The Lady Vikings will begin the postseason Oct. 26 during the league championships held at Sunnyside Christian High School.

Mendoza said she hopes to see her team (8-3) continue to play the way they have been as they go forward in the season.

"If we keep playing the way we have been we shouldn't have a problem," Mendoza said.
