Lady Grizzlies get first league win

Sunnyside's Melissa Caballero (#24) led the third quarter surge that helped the Lady Grizzlies pick up their first Mid-Valley League win.

There is some good news and bad news for fans of the Sunnyside High School girls basketball program.

The Lady Grizzlies gained their first Mid-Valley League win last night with a 42-38 victory over Selah, in the process snapping a three-game losing streak.

The bad news for the Lady Grizzlies is that there is three evident problems with the group's play on the floor. The first of the problems is not that bad. The Lady Grizzlies are a young team and it is evident in their play on the floor, but the only way to solve that is by playing more games, agrees Sunnyside Coach Leo Gomez. The next two problems are ones that the Sunnyside girls may or may not be able to remedy. The offense of the Lady Grizzlies is severely restricted due to the lack of an inside game. The second and arguably the most dominate problem for the Sunnyside squad is a lack of leadership. Gomez agreed on the lack of leadership, saying he has his ideas on a couple of players he would like to see step to the forefront for Sunnyside. Gomez, though, felt his team took a step in the right direction last night towards developing that needed inside threat on the floor.

Gomez cited the inside play of Lana Pangle for the Lady Grizzlies last night as one of the reasons for the Sunnyside win. Pangle had an excellent night for Sunnyside with 9 points and nine boards.

"She played well," said Gomez. "It was probably her best game of the season."

Gomez said Pangle has to learn to be more aggressive inside to help out her team.

Some careless decision in the first half led to an early deficit for Sunnyside. The Lady Grizzlies trailed 16-14 at the end of the first half after some costly turnovers.

The Lady Grizzlies rebounded with a nice effort in the third quarter and should have busted the game wide open heading into the final period. Melissa Caballero drained two 3-pointers in the third quarter and Hilary Van de Graaf has six points to lead the Lady Grizzlies, who outscored Selah 19-12 in the third. Indecisiveness on the part of Sunnyside was basically what allowed Selah back into the game in the fourth quarter.

Gomez attributes his team letting Selah back into the game in the fourth quarter to Sunnyside's lack of varsity experience. Selah took the final quarter 10-9.

Gomez was impressed with his team and the way the Lady Grizzlies fought in the second half. He especially noted the strong outing from Caballero to start things rolling for Sunnyside. Caballero led the Lady Grizzlies in scoring with 10 points.

Sunnyside (1-2, 4-5) will have its work cut out for it Friday night at West Valley. Saturday the Lady Grizzlies will be back at home against Wapato.

"I am hoping Friday night we can show up and just play a good game," said Gomez.
