Fire destroys contents of Sunnyside home

A Sunnyside family has lost its home following a house fire at 609 North Sixth Street this past Friday night just after 10 p.m.

The fire, which investigators determined was unintentional and started by a disregarded heat source, started in one of the bedrooms of the house underneath the head of the bed, according to Sunnyside Fire Department Battalion Chief Lloyd Hazzard.

He said the investigation showed that the cause of the fire was neither electrical nor caused by candles.

"The fire was contained to the one bedroom, but they had smoke damage throughout the house," he said.

Damage is estimated at $15,000 to the structure and $45,000 for contents to the home.

"We listed it as a total loss on contents," said Hazzard.

The house, which belonged to Angel Garza, is currently not being lived in, according to Hazzard. Garza, his wife and two children are staying with relatives.

This weekend the Sunnyside Fire Department also responded to a dumpster fire in the 1400 block of S. Sixth Street. Damage is estimated at $400.

Firefighters also responded to a grass fire in the 4000 block of Outlook Road Sunday evening.
